Hailing from Mombasa, Kenya, Brennen Matthews began his professional career in 2000 with World Vision as a Food Security Officer in Nairobi, focusing on project proposal development and technical team capacity building. After obtaining his Masters of Arts degree in International Development Studies, a Bachelors of Sociology (minor in Creative Writing), and a Bachelors of Community Development Studies (minor in Literature), Brennen went on to work with some of the world's largest not-for-profit organizations (eg. World Vision, CARE, Red Cross, Tearfund UK), and has overseen communications and marketing strategies at the national level in Kenya, Uganda and Mali.
An avid reader and writer, Brennen published his first article in a leading daily Canadian newspaper in 2001, focusing on Kenya's response to America's devastating attack on 9/11. Since then, his work has been published in a wide variety of well-respected newspapers and magazines from around the world.
As the Editor-in-Chief with Destination Magazine, East Africa's leading upmarket lifestyle title, Brennen worked with some of the entertainment industry's most famous film, music and television actors, such as Scarlett Johansson, Matthew McConaughey, Ryan Reynolds, Ben Kingsley, Andrea Bocelli, LL Cool J, Jennifer Connelly and Forest Whitaker, showcasing a more relatable, human side of these well-known personalities. He managed a vibrant team of writers, photographers, advertising executives and digital media professionals and was at the helm of some of the most important stories to be told in the region.
Brennen has also partnered with senior publicity teams at major global studios like FOX, Warner Brothers, NBCUniversal, HBO, AMC, The Weinstein Company, and Disney-ABC and has worked in strategic partnership with marketing teams behind companies as diverse as Clarks and Giorgio Armani to BMW and Fairmont.
Brennen's professional journey has resulted in a unique blend of skills with 16+ years of senior management, 19 years of freelance writing, and eight years of Editor-in-Chief experience with East Africa's award-winning Destination Magazine. Currently, Brennen is Editor with ROUTE Magazine, a leading national American bi-monthly magazine that focuses on the fascinating human story behind US road travel, Route 66 and vintage Americana.
